The Big Apple Film Festival is proud to congratulate its 2007 alumni.
“Owl and the Sparrow” , winner of the 2007 BAFF Best Feature Film has been nominated for the John Cassavetes Award of the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards , as well as a 2007 Gotham Award for Breakthrough Director Stephane Gauger. In addition, after receiving its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and its North American premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival, the film was awarded the Audience Award at the 2007 Los Angeles Film Festival, Winner of the Emerging Filmmaker Award at the Denver International Film Festival, Winner of the NETPAC Award at the Hawaii International Film Festival, as well as a series of other awards, nominations and screenings at festivals around the world.
Alan Cumming , winner of the 2007 BAFF “Golden Apple Award ”, presented his latest film “ Suffering Man's Charity ” on opening night of the 2007 Big Apple Film Festival, which he directs and stars in along with David Boreanaz, Anne Heche and Carrie Fisher. The film was described by Oasis Magazine as "Wildly unpredictable, devilishly fiendish, and unquestionable enjoyable, for the people who like their movies dark and their protagonists darker, Suffering Man's Charity is definitely worth your time" and by KVUE.com(ABC Affiliate, Austin, TX) as a “Dark tale of deception breaks out of the traditional narrative film mode with an edge guaranteed to shake up audiences”. Following its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival, the film went on to screen and win awards at a series of film festivals around the world including the Providence Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Gen Art Film Festival. “Suffering Man's Charity” marks Alan Cumming's second experience behind the camera since co-directing “The Anniversary Party” along with Jennifer Jason Leigh and starring Alan Cumming, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Parker Posey, Jennifer Beals and Gwyneth Paltrow. He has also won the Tony Award for his role in Broadway's “Caberet”.
The 2007 BAFF award for Best Animation went to “ The Chubb Chubb Saves X-Mas ”, with voice over performances by Zachary Gordon and Jeffrey Tambor. The film is a follow up to the Academy Award winning animated short film “The Chubb Chubbs!” The Chubb Chubb Saves X-Mas has been released by Sony Pictures as a short film on the DVD of the 2007 Sony Pictures release “Surf's Up.”
